RANKING RULES BETWEEN 1990 AND 1992

At the dawn of the ATP Tour, the ATP revamped the entire ranking system, switching from an average based system, to one that totals the points of all players but counts only the best 14 results. The ATP kept the 52-rolling week system which stood at the core of when points enter or exit from point breakdowns, and they also kept the bonus points, but they eliminated the complicated divisors. The stars assigned to each tournament were also eliminated, the ATP adopting once again a category based approach with the foundation of the new World Series and Championship Series tiers. Challengers were thus branded as a separate tier as well, eliminated them sometimes offering the same amount of points as low level Grand Prix tournaments just because of the same star classification.

SYSTEM SPAN: 52-WEEK ROLLING SYSTEM [Tournaments counted for each player drop out of their breakdown 52 weeks after they enter the system]
SYSTEM TYPE: CATEGORY BASED WITH PRIZE MONEY SUB-CLASSES [Tournaments have different point weights according to the type of tournament a player has entered. The higher category, the more points scored. Most categories allowed different point structures according to tournament prize money payout.]
POINTS: ADDITIVE [Players receive points according to the round they are eliminated in. These points are added and players are ordered according to their total points]
TOURNAMENTS: BEST 14 [Only the best 14 tournaments results can be counted.]
MINIMUM PRIZE MONEY: $25000
TRANSITION: DIRECT [Points were not transofrmed from one system to another, the ATP simply removed the average calculation, and allowed the total points of the Best 14 to be counted. Therefore, players jumped positions once the system came into effect on Jan 1, 1990.]

BASE RULES

The 1990s system allows players to count their best 14 results and form a point total. Players are ordered according to this total. In addition, players are allowed to count the ATP World Championship for the first time in the 1990s, until the Monday after the final regular calendar tournament of the year.
All tournaments are counted immediately after they are finished (on the upcoming Monday). Exceptions to this rule are some Satellite tournaments which may be counted one or two weeks later, depending on communication. Once into the system, tournaments remain counted for 52 weeks.
The rankings are published every Monday of the year. Exception to this rule are the mid-Mondays of tournaments lasting two weeks into the calendar.
All players must count all 4 Grand Slams for which they are a direct acceptance on the original acceptance list as well as their other 10 best results from all other tournaments.
If the player is not part of the original main draw acceptance list of a mandatory event and decides to not participate before the draw is released, they may count an extra non-Mandatory event.
In weeks in which a player does not have the mandatory 4 events, he is allowed to count extra non-Mandatory events to a total of 14.
Any late withdrawal from tour or challenger level events results in a 0 point-penalty to be counted as part of the Best 14 series of events in the player's breakdown.

TIES

When two or more players have the same number of points, ties shall be broken with the following rules:

The fewest events played (all penalties count as a played tournament), and if still tied, then
The total number of tournament points (as opposed to bonus points) gained in all the tournaments beyond the Best 14.

POINTS

Players are given points according to the round they lose in and the tournament's category.
Players reaching the second or any round of a tournament by drawing a Bye shall receive first round points if they lose in the first round they play in.
Tournaments where players score 0 points will not be counted in the player's total tournament count.
Points are being awarded for qualifying into the main draw of events in addition to the tournament points scored in the main draw.
The tables below (of the two separate iterations) show the point distribution for tournament category, tournament main draw and qualifying draw sizes and round. The colors in this table are the same used inside the Ranking tables from this site on ranking weeks where this system applies.

ITERATION 2 (1991):

In the second version of the 1990s system, the ATP diversified the Grand Slam sub-categories to 10 point increments and increased the points for the ATP Championships.

In the third version of the point table, the ATP shifted the World Series and Championship Series to 10-point increment categories as well, along with an increment to ATP World Championship points and Challenger Series awarding more points.

BONUS POINTS

Besides tournament points, players were also awarded bonus points according to the rank of the opponent they beat.
No bonus points were awarded in ATP World Championships.

SATELLITE CIRCUITS

Players were able to participate in series of tournaments called Satellite Circuits. The series consisted of 4 consecutive tournaments, with the last one called a Masters. Satellites were broken into categories based on total prize money payout. Categories for a payout including hospitality was the equivalent of the category with the next higher payout without hospitality.
In relation to the round they finished in each tournament of the series, players were awarded Circuit Points. The table below describes the Circuit Point breakdown for each round players finished in:

Points are being awarded for qualifying into the main draw of events in addition to the tournament points scored in the main draw.

The tables below (of the two separate iterations) show the point distribution for tournament category, tournament main draw and qualifying draw sizes and round. The colors in this table are the same used inside the Ranking tables from this site on ranking weeks where this system applies.

ITERATION 1 (1990):

First version of the point table with the 1990 System expanded.

ITERATION 2 (1991):

In the second version of the 1990s system, the ATP diversified the Grand Slam sub-categories to 10 point increments and increased the points for the ATP Championships.

ITERATION 3 (1992):

In the third version of the point table, the ATP shifted the World Series and Championship Series to 10-point increment categories as well, along with an increment to ATP World Championship points and Challenger Series awarding more points.

BONUS POINTS

Besides tournament points, players were also awarded bonus points according to the rank of the opponent they beat.

No bonus points were awarded in ATP World Championships.

SATELLITE CIRCUITS

In relation to the round they finished in each tournament of the series, players were awarded Circuit Points. The table below describes the Circuit Point breakdown for each round players finished in:

Players were awarded ATP Points depending on the amount of Circuit Points they earned. The conversion table is below:
