RANKING RULES BETWEEN 2009 AND 2018

The ATP needed to solidify the system that was used between 2000 and 2008, so the ATP perfected it by doubling the points of most tournament types. One of the key changes the ATP made to differentiate from the old system, was to introduce points for the Davis Cup.

SYSTEM SPAN: 52-WEEK ROLLING SYSTEM [Tournaments counted for each player drop out of their breakdown 52 weeks after they enter the system]
SYSTEM TYPE: CATEGORY BASED [Tournaments have different point weights according to the type of tournament a player has entered. The higher category, the more points scored]
POINTS: ADDITIVE [Players receive points according to the round they are eliminated in. These points are added and players are ordered according to their total points]
TOURNAMENTS: BEST 18 [Only the best 18 tournaments results can be counted.]
MINIMUM PRIZE MONEY: $35000 (2009-2014); $40000 (2015-2016); $50000 (2016-)
TRANSITION: POINT DOUBLING [All tournament points gained in the 2000-2008 system have been doubled at the start of 2009]

BASE RULES

The 2009 system allows players to count their best 18 results and form a point total. Players are ordered according to this total. In addition, players are allowed to count the ATP World Tour Finals as a 19th result, until the Monday after the final regular calendar tournament of the year.
All tournaments are counted immediately after they are finished (on the upcoming Monday). Exceptions to this rule are Futures tournaments which are counted one week later (Futures played during the final week of the year are live). Once into the system, tournaments remain counted for 52 weeks.
The rankings are published every Monday of the year. Exception to this rule are the mid-Mondays of tournaments lasting for more than one week: Grand Slams, Indian Wells and Miami tournaments.
A commitment player is defined as a player who has finished in the Top 30 at the year end rankings of the previous season.
All players must count all 4 Grand Slams and 8 Mandatory Masters for which they are a direct acceptance on the original acceptance list as well as their other 6 best results from all other tournaments.
If the player is not part of the original main draw acceptance list of a mandatory event and decides to not participate before the draw is released, they may count an extra non-Mandatory event.
In weeks in which a player does not have the mandatory 12 events, he is allowed to count extra non-Mandatory events to a total of 18.
Once a player becomes part of the main draw of any of the 12 Mandatory events, either as a qualifier, lucky loser, direct acceptance, special exempt or wild card, that tournament counts for his rankings, so any late withdrawal will be a 0-point penalty.

COMMITMENT PLAYER RULES

Late withdrawals from ATP World Tour 500 events shall result in a 0-point penalty. Commitment players must play 4 ATP World Tour 500 tournaments across a calendar year, one of which must be played after the US Open. Failure to do so, will result in 0-point penalties for all missing tournaments.

NON-COMMITMENT PLAYER RULES

Late withdrawals from ATP World Tour 500 events shall result in a 0-point penalty.

TIES

When two or more players have the same number of points, ties shall be broken with the following rules:

Total points from all Grand Slams, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Mandatory tournaments and ATP World Tour Finals main draws, and if still tied, then,
The fewest events played (all penalties count as a played tournament), and if still tied, then
The total number of points from the players' best tournament, then, if needed, the second best, and so on.

POINTS

Players are given points according to the round they lose in and the tournament's category.
Players reaching the second or any round of a tournament by drawing a Bye shall receive first round points if they lose in the first round they play in.
Players who enter a tournament by means of a Wild Card shall receive 0 points in the first round they play in.
The table below shows the point distribution for tournament category, tournament main draw and qualifying draw sizes and round. The colors in this table are the same used inside the Ranking tables from this site on ranking weeks where this system applies.

TEMPORARY TOURNAMENTS AND RULES

Besides the tournaments and categories marked with a red background in the above table, there were a number of temporary tournaments and rules across this period.

DAVIS CUP [2009-2015]: All the Davis Cup matches played within a year would be added in a single tournament total with the different rounds played dropping out or entering at different points across the year. Each round would stay in the Davis Cup point total for 52 weeks. Players would receive points per rubber won, but no points for dead rubbers. There would also be a bonus for players winning all 8 matches in a year (125 points), as well as one for winning 7 matches and being part of the winning team (75 points). Previous round points were given to players skipping a round. The points a player would receive are according to the following table:

WORLD TEAM CUP [2009-2012]: The point distribution was similar to the Davis Cup. There would be two Singles point paths, one for the country's best player, the other for the second best. A bonus would be given to a player winning all 4 matches and being part of the winning team. The table below details it:

BEST 4 ATP 500 AND BEST 2 OTHERS [2009-2012]: The rule was in place until late 2011 and was slowly replaced in 2012 across the whole year. Commitment players had to count their Best 4 ATP 500 and Best 2 other tournaments only. Non-commitment players were allowed to count up to 4 of their best ATP 500 results.

ATP 1000 MASTERS EXEMPTIONS [2015-]: Rankings-wise, players are exempt from playing up to 3 ATP 1000 Masters if they fulfill any of the following:

Players have reached the age of 30 at January 1 of the current year.
Players have participated in 600 ATP level matches. (pre-2010 non-ATP level matches also count, but only ATP level matches count after 2010).
Players have fulfilled 12 years of service (first year of service is the first year in which a player has participated in 12 tournaments offering ranking points).

Each of the items from the above exempts a player from an ATP 1000 Masters event. Starting with 2017, players were not allowed to skip a tournament which they had withdrawn from at the previous edition without playing any match.

ATP 1000 Monte Carlo counted as part of the Big Tournaments inside the first ranking tiebreaker until US Open 2011.
